Wiki Pedagogy (Renee Fountain, 2005). This extensive article describes wikis and explores their potential pedagogical aspects. Of particular interest are:

  • Four "wiki essences" as noted by Lamb
    1. Anyone can change anything
      • Creating and editing pages is quick and easy
    2. Wikis use simplified hypertext markup
      • While complex formatting with HTML may be possible in some programs, most rely on stripped-down, limited formatting. Fewer tags means quicker learning time
    3. WikiPageTitlesAreMashedTogether
      • This is not necessarily true for all programs. WikiMedia doesn't require CamelCase
    4. Content is egoless, timeless, and never finished
      • Anonymity possible
      • "Author" and "ownership" radically shift their meaning
      • Content "cloning" across wikis acceptable - termed "plagiarism" in non-wiki world
      • Organized by context, which may be in flux as much as content
      • Content may be deliberately left incomplete in hopes that someone else will be able to contribute

There is also a Wiki version of this article.
